Description
The Small Engine Repair course is a 6-day hands-on program designed to build essential skills in maintaining and repairing small engines commonly used across northern communities. These include two-stroke and four-stroke engines found in skidoos, ATVs, snowblowers, outboard motors, and other equipment vital for daily life.
Participants will learn the core mechanical principles behind small engine function, including how combustion, fuel delivery, ignition, lubrication, and cooling systems work. The course focuses on troubleshooting and repairing common issues, with an emphasis on practical diagnostics, tool usage, and routine maintenance.
Safety is built into every part of the training. Participants will be taught how to recognize mechanical hazards, follow safety procedures, and use personal protective equipment (PPE) to reduce risk when working with tools and machinery.
The course is structured around real-world applications, with examples and repair tasks drawn from the equipment used in participants’ own communities. In addition to mechanical theory, participants will build confidence through guided hands-on practice, learning to take apart, inspect, and reassemble engines safely and effectively. Instruction is provided by a certified Red Seal mechanic with experience teaching in remote and northern communities. This course is designed to meet learners where they’re at, providing a mix of foundational knowledge and practical experience that supports local employment and self-reliance.
